Protecting ourselves and others does not violate ahimsa. Practicing ahimsa means we take responsibility for our own harmful behavior and attempt to stop the harm caused by others. Being neutral is not the point. Practicing true ahimsa springs from the clear intention to act with clarity and love.

nonstealing. While commonly understood as not taking what is not ours, it can also mean not taking more than we need.

One way to sidestep the trap of greed is to follow the advice of the sages: Be happy with what you have. This spirit of true renunciation will diminish the power of aparigraha.

relationships, like asanas, require the willingness to remain present for the difficulties and challenges that inevitably arise. "Discomfort and imbalance are flags that adjustment is needed."

As with any type of yoga, one of the blessings of the yoga of relationship is the profound inner freedom that comes from realizing the goodness and beauty of our essential Being.

Learning to pause is the first step toward transformation and healing. We pause by stopping what we're doing—we stop blaming, withdrawing, obsessing, distracting ourselves.

we can have positive perfectionism and negative perfectionism

striving for reasonable and realistic standards that leads to a sense of self-satisfaction and enhanced self-esteem," whereas "neurotic perfectionism is a tendency to strive for excessively high standards and is motivated by fears of failure and concern about disappointing others.

Carl Jung went further—he said that healthy perfectionism comes out of the desire for wholeness and fullness, the fundamental human need for individuation and spiritual growth.

Acknowledging a failure doesn't mean that your whole life is a failure. On the contrary, it's often the first step toward freedom.

Conversation

I: I know what the article said. <--- if you said so, I can say you don't know what the article is saying...

Friend: I do not meant understand.

I read the words, and I know the words. Understand?? No. That’s what I meant.

I: then you don't know loh....I dont use "understand" to talk to you.......why you change the word????

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

I read a booklet from 圣严法师 , I must first 安心before I can 安身. If the heart is not in the right place, sure the body will not be right.

Stretch and Strength

Although we'll emphasize stretch, bear in mind that in order to be healthy the muscle needs to be strong, too.

23 Nov 07

10 Mar 08

The latissimus dorsi is the most extensive muscle in the body, covering (if you include its connective tissue) the entire lower back, a large swath of the mid-back, and much of the sides of the trunk before running upward to form most of the outer wall of the armpit.

When the lats pull taught, they arrest the lift of her arms before they arrive completely overhead. This makes her arms angle forward rather than pointing straight up, creating the characteristic "closed armpit" profile of students with tight lats (see left photo). If the student continues to try to lift her arms higher or move them backward, the tight muscles tug at their origins, drawing her upper sacrum, pelvic rim, lumbar spine, lower thoracic spine and lower ribs up and forward. This is what creates the characteristic arched back and forward-poking-lower-ribs profile of students with tight lats.

Knee

It's also important to internally rotate when you do inversions and seated forward bends. Again, the goal is to have your knees point straight ahead (up toward the ceiling, in seated forward bends), so your legs are neither externally nor internally rotated.

Nothing in Control

It's not only weather patterns and other people who are beyond our control: Our own bodies operate largely in the no-control zone. Yogic lore notwithstanding, few of us can control our heartbeat or the rate of our blood circulation, much less avoid picking up a virus on a plane or suffering the crazed mutation of a set of cancer cells.

When you're in your controller self—that is, when you're in denial about these simple facts of life—it's no wonder that you're often irritated, scared, or tense. Yes, it's important to have a measure of control over life, but the deeper truth is that much of the time control is simply impossible, so the only way to avoid suffering is to give up your need to control.

I tend to believe pattern.

without discipline there is no internal container—no energy—or space for transformation.

No Should

It's always important to leave your ego at the door when you practice yoga, so don't be too proud to practice Vrksasana near a wall if it helps. As with all postures, it's essential to let go of your ambition about how you think you should be in the pose and accept where you are as fully as possible. Be aware that your balance and flexibility can change from day to day, depending on what you ate, how you slept, and a host of other variables. So don't assume you'll glide effortlessly into the pose just because you've done it before. Tuning in to the subtle changes in your body, mind, and spirit will teach you how to stay in the present moment. Be playful and patient, use props if you need them, and if you fall, try again. With time, practice, and patience, you will make progress.

Friend likes to say should this and should that. Told him many many times it was not way of yoga. He doesn't listen, nothing I can help anymore.

Spine

If you feel achy in the lower back during Up Dog, it probably means that your upper back is stiff and your lower back is overcompensating by bending too much. With backbends the aim is to have all areas of the spine participate, not just the parts that are easy to move.

Concentrate

"Concentrate wherever the mind finds satisfaction." How do meditators know the mind is finding satisfaction in a technique? First, they should enjoy it and be able to relax within it. It should give them a feeling of peace. Once they've become familiar with it, the practice should feel natural. If they have to work too hard at it, that may be a sign it is the wrong practice.

No way!

Inexhaustible

There's a saying in Buddhism: Delusions are inexhaustible. If we are constantly running from one thing to the next in a way that makes us feel depleted, then sooner or later we need to acknowledge that the ideas we have about what we can accomplish are out of sync with the reality of our lives.

the yogic principle of aparigraha, nongrasping, comes into the picture. Aparigraha teaches you to let go of the need to produce more, achieve more, acquire more. It motivates you to relax your iron-fisted grasp on material or measurable accomplishment.

Downward Facing Dog

rotate your arms externally (away from your ears) until your elbow creases face your thumbs. Feel the broadness of your upper back and the charge in your arms and shoulders.

Warrior II

Stand with your legs ready for Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II). Lift your breastbone up and pull the scapula down: This action requires release and lengthening in the upper traps and contraction and firmness in the lower traps. Next, lift your arms out to the sides to shoulder height, turning your palms up. Feel how turning the palms up helps bring the shoulders down and activates the lower traps. Keeping that action and position of the shoulder blades, turn the palms back down; you now have the correct shoulder and arm position for Warrior II and many of the other standing poses.

Chest Open

Tuck your tailbone slightly and gently firm your lower belly (just below your navel). These two actions are vital in both Chaturanga and Upward Dog because they elongate and support your lower back. Now, slide your shoulders away from your ears and squeeze the bottom tips of your shoulder blades together. Feel how this awakens your upper back as it broadens your chest.

Friend's Downward Facing Dog

Oh! No! Who told him to bend the knees???

Bend the knee alternatively for warm up is good. However while doing the pose, nothing can be bent.

The purpose of bending the knee is for the ankle to press firmly downward.

Finally, thing happens. Bye Bye! Man!

Intelligence

The intelligence of the body is a fact. It is real. The intelligence of the brain is only imagination. So the imagination has to be made real. The brain may dream of doing a difficult backbend today, but it cannot force the impossible even on to a willing body. We are always trying to progress, but inner cooperation is essential.

If the brain receives knowledge from the body, it will be able to increase the intelligence of the body later. In this way, the body and the brain begin working together to master the asana.

After acting, reflect on what you have done. Has the brain interpreted the action correctly? If the brain does not observe correctly, then there is confusion in action. The duty of the brain is to receive knowledge from the body and then guide the body to further refine the action. Pause and reflect between each movement. This is progression in attention. Then in the stillness you can be filled with awareness. When you ask yourself, "Has every part of me done its job?" this is self-awareness. The Self has to find out whether this has been done well or not.

There should be constant analysis throughout the action, not just afterwards. This leads to true understanding. The real meaning of knowledge is that action and analysis synchronize. Slow motion allows reflective intelligence. It allows our mind to watch the movement and leads to a skillful action. The art of yoga lies in the acuity of observation.

Self-consciousness is when the mind constantly worries and wonders about itself, doubting constantly and being self-absorbed.

When you are self-conscious, you are going to exhaust yourself. You are also going to strain the muscles unnecessarily because you are thinking about the asana and how far you want to stretch. You are not experiencing the asana and stretching according to your capacity.

The moment you bring attention, you are creating something, and creation has life and energy. Awareness allows us to overcome tiredness and exhaustion in our poses and in our lives. Awareness in action brings back energy and rejuvenates the body and mind. Awareness brings life. Life is dynamic, and so therefore the asanas should also be.

So Content

Received praise again from senior management :) Like the word "contintually" and "efficiency".

US Friend's Words

Stretch

While doing arm raising (actually stretching the side muscle), feet are adjusted automatically (pressing down). A proper stretch, alignment is there.

Friend's Warrior

Friend told me no matter how he adjusted the hips, they are not in square form. Sure he cannot do warrior in the right place. Answer is without alignment.

No need to look at him practising, I can ask alot of questions and know how he does the pose.

Warrior is not an easy pose. A long way to go.

Intelligence

In between the mind and the ego lies the middle layer, intelligence. The distinguishing characteristics of intelligence are its capacity to perceive itself and its ability to choose to do something it hasn’t done before. In other words, intelligence is the part of our consciousness that enables us to objectively observe ourselves (including the mind and ego) and initiate change. Iyengar describes intelligence as “the revolutionary of our consciousness.”

Iyengar says that when one layer of consciousness is active, it expands, causing the other layers to retract. So when we activate our intelligence, we force the overactive mind and clinging ego to recede, giving us the experience of stillness that is yoga.

There is no purpose to using a prop if we don’t learn something from it.

while we are in the pose we must study the pose, not merely stay in it.

30 May 08

Why that? This is method you don’t understanding (why? because they dont understand the correct method). That is why you this method you follow - no trouble! Body also is very perfect. You can understand? That is the method.

That bad practice is not giving good knowledge.

Sthira means perfect. Sukha means happiness. That posture you sit and very happy you, don’t anyone pain: That is Stira Sukham. That is called asana. You can understand.

650K

Crazy :)

make me understand the article

Leg

When done correctly, standing poses also strengthen the muscles that protect the knee and ankle joints and help you build a better foundation for your whole body. "They teach the muscles in your legs to hold your joints in proper alignment," explains Dario Fredrick, an exercise physiologist and Iyengar Yoga instructor in San Anselmo, California. By teaching you to properly plant your feet and align your knees and hips, standing poses improve your posture and coordination in everyday activities, not just during your time on the mat. As you learn proper alignment, you'll activate and strengthen the smaller, less-used, and often weak muscles in your arches, lower legs, and inner and outer thighs rather than relying solely on the larger leg muscles.

By keeping your knees in proper alignment, you're automatically working to improve your weaknesses.

23 Apr 08

Empty and Full

It is very important in Tai Chi Chuan practice to be able to understand the empty and full concept. Generally, in Tai Chi Chuan practice, empty refers to the top and full refers to the bootm. Here, top refers to the upper body. The upper body is very light, as if empty. Bottom refers to the lower body. When the feet are full, it forms a strong foundation. Therefore, empty the top means suspend the head from above, relax the shoulders and sink the elbows, relax the chest and raise the back, loosen the waist and pull the abdomen inward. Full in the bottom means to pull the buttock inward, open the groin, bend the knees and point the toes forward.

The bottom has to be full in order to be stable. The top has to be empty so that it will be easy to move. This empty and full happens everywhere in the body. After one understands this concept, the body will have a better balance and coordination.

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Unsafe Havens

While the basic experience of fear is that "something is wrong," many people turn that feeling into "there must be something wrong with me." This is especially true in Western culture, where one's sense of belonging to family, community, and the natural world is often weak and the pressure to achieve is so strong. You may feel as though you must live up to certain standards in order to be loved, so you constantly monitor yourself, trying to see if you're falling short.

When you live in this trance of fear, you instinctively develop strategies to protect yourself. I call these attempts to find safety and relief "false refuges," since they work, at best, only for the time being.

One such strategy is physical contraction. When you stay trapped in fear, you begin to feel tight and guarded, even when there is no immediate threat. Your shoulders may become permanently knotted and raised, your head thrust forward, your back hunched, your belly tense. Chronic fear can generate a permanent suit of armor. In such a state, we become, as the Tibetan teacher Chögyam Trungpa taught, a bundle of tense muscles defending our very existence.

The trance of fear traps the mind in rigid patterns, too. The mind obsesses and produces endless stories, reminding you of the bad things that might happen and creating strategies to avoid them.

You might run from fear by staying busy, trying to accomplish a lot, or judging others critically to boost your ego.
